Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music not only brought attention back to the style, but also to Latin music generally. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs composed in Spanish mostly, and four others in 2016. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017, 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it onto the Top 100 for 2020. there were 41 songs. The release of Justin Bieber's bilingual version of Despacito (2017) the most well-known musicians have begun collaborating with reggaeton performers including Drake and Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) and Madonna with Maluma on Medellin (2019). Reggaeton's most prominent performers lamented the trend towards mainstream music in 2020. But a new group, Rauw alejandro, was trying to change the course. The genre often incorporated elements of electronic dance and other genres.
